Inosuke's Katana

Hashibira Inosuke wearing boar mask holding dual Nichirin swords, Demon Slayer anime character

Hashibira Inosuke is a distinctive core character in the popular Japanese anime Demon Slayer and all its derivative works. As a fellow Demon Slayer working alongside Kamado Tanjirou, he was raised alone in the wild mountains since childhood, completely isolated from human society.

He is well-known for his iconic grey wild boar head mask and habitual topless outfit. Once taking off the mask, he has a surprisingly delicate face, matched with a reckless, competitive and straightforward personality. Different from other demon slayers who rely solely on eyesight to track enemies, Inosuke evolves an ultra-sensitive sense of touch after years of wild survival. He can capture subtle air flow changes to perceive enemy positions, sneak attacks and attack trajectories in advance. Moreover, he independently created his exclusive Breath of the Beast breathing style. This unique technique perfectly combines his wild physical talent and targeted breathing rhythm, greatly boosting the striking power and attack speed of his dual-wield sword attacks.

What is Inosuke's katana called?

Among all Demon Slayer members, Inosuke is the only fighter who insists on dual-wield Nichirin swords all year round, making his weapon configuration extremely recognizable. His first pair of swords were not customized by official swordsmiths, but seized from other ordinary demon slayers.

These original rough blades come without standard tsuba (hand guard) and complete wooden hilt. The handle part is simply wrapped with thick cloth for stable gripping. Without matching scabbards for storage, Inosuke can only wrap the two swords around his torso all the time during daily patrols and battles. He always proudly claims that his sharp blades can cut everything smoothly just like slicing fine silk. Unfortunately, this pair of unmodified original swords cannot withstand fierce fierce battles, and were completely broken during the fierce battle on Natagumo Mountain.

After the weapon damage incident, professional swordsmith Kanamori Kouzou specially forged a brand-new matched pair of Nichirin swords for Inosuke. Different from the common black or crimson blades used by most demon slayers, this customized pair adopts unique cold grey-blue blade tone exclusive to Inosuke.

Why are Inosuke's swords jagged and damaged?

After receiving the brand-new intact Nichirin swords made by senior craftsmen, Inosuke did not cherish these exquisite weapons as other slayers do. Instead, he picked up hard mountain stones on purpose and violently hit the blade edges repeatedly, leaving dense regular notches all over both sword edges.

The swordsmith Kanamori Kouzou was extremely angry at first when seeing the deliberately destroyed brand-new swords, thinking Inosuke wasted elaborate handmade weapons. However, he observed carefully and found that these artificial gaps distributed evenly on the blade are not random damage. These jagged edges can produce stronger cutting friction when slashing demons, bringing unexpected combat advantages.

Finally, the swordsmith was inspired by Inosuke's bold modification method. Later, he added standardized jagged blade designs to some customized Nichirin swords for aggressive dual-wield users.

The Hidden Advantage of Inosuke's Jagged Dual Swords

Many anime fans misunderstand that Inosuke's broken sword edges are just naive destructive behavior. In fact, the jagged blades fit his wild and frantic close-quarters combat style perfectly. When fighting demons with tough skin and regenerative bodies, the serrated edges can cause tearing wounds instead of smooth cutting wounds, effectively suppressing demon self-healing ability in actual combat.

Combined with his flexible Beast Breathing combo moves, the modified dual swords make Inosuke more dominant in close-range group battles and one-on-one duels. This set of self-modified weapons has become the most iconic symbol of this wild mountain-born swordsman.
