Yoriichi's Katana
Among countless iconic Nichirin swords throughout Demon Slayer, Yoriichi's Katana holds the most extraordinary background and power, as it belongs to Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the undisputed strongest swordsman in the entire series. Born into a traditional samurai household during the Sengoku period, Yoriichi possessed two innate talents no other human could match: the Transparent World and the Demon Slayer Mark from the day he was born. He single-handedly created Sun Breathing, the root technique of every breathing style used by Demon Slayer Corps members later on.

Every Hashira and Upper Moon demon carries a unique Nichirin blade matching their breathing style and personality, you can check complete introductions of all character swords through our Demon Slayer Katanas full collection blog. After leaving his restrictive family home, Yoriichi met and married a gentle woman named Shi, and they lived a peaceful simple life until a vicious demon massacred his wife and unborn child. Driven by grief and hatred for demons, he joined the Demon Slayer Corps and passed down his breathing techniques, drastically lifting the overall combat strength of the entire organization. As the core soul character running through all Demon Slayer plots, Yoriichi’s existence shapes the whole world’s combat system.
What katana does Yoriichi use?

Yoriichi exclusively wields a special Nichirin blade crafted for Sun Breathing. Its base appearance blends deep black and faint red tones, while the red luminous state only activates when he channels full Sun Breathing power. Since Sun Breathing is the source of all derivative breath forms, this blade’s glowing crimson state carries unmatched lethality against demons. When fully empowered, the blade turns vivid blood red and occasionally emits dazzling golden radiance, wrapped in scorching solar energy that burns a demon’s internal organs continuously, delaying their rapid regeneration ability significantly.
You can view complete official manga and anime setting records on Kimetsu no Yaiba Fandom Wiki. Unlike regular Nichirin swords with single solid colors, Yoriichi’s blade features subtle carved markings and a distinctive papaya-shaped tsuba, a subtle signature detail that distinguishes it from ordinary swords used by corps members.
Did Tanjiro get Yoriichi sword?
Many new fans often mix up Tanjiro’s black Nichirin blade with Yoriichi’s legendary sword, yet there are clear visual and plot differences between the two. Tanjiro’s blade stays pure black under normal conditions without natural red luminous effects, and every time his sword cracks or shatters during battles, swordsmiths from the Swordsmith Village will forge a brand-new replacement for him. At no point in the original manga or anime does Tanjiro ever take possession of Yoriichi’s original blade.
The original Yoriichi’s Katana also has a tragic ending tied to his elder twin brother Kokushibo. In his final years, the elderly Yoriichi tracked down Upper Rank One Kokushibo and nearly delivered a fatal strike with one single slash, yet he passed away quietly mid-swing before landing the finishing blow. Filled with rage and jealousy, Kokushibo split Yoriichi’s lifeless body with one powerful cut, and the ancient Nichirin sword snapped apart in the same moment, leaving no intact original relic of this legendary blade behind.
